Unit 7 Topic 6
Using Unity Formulae
What changes to the flux oxides in the unity formula could be made to lower the maturing temperature of a glaze?
The flux group could be changed so that the values total more than one and the Al2O3 : SiO2 ratio remains constant.

More MgO could be added to the glaze to make it melt at a lower temperature.
Strong fluxes such as the KNO group or Li2O in the unity formula could be increased or added while lowering a weaker oxide in the flux group.
Changes should never be made to the flux group of oxides as such a change would disturb the unity of the formula.
